This is an Old Original Muffler For The Rock Island. The original mixer appears to be in excellent condtion. It appears that someone added an ignition cam to the outside of the original exhaust valve cam but that ignition cam appears to be missing.
The original ignitor is missing and has been replaced with a plate with a spark plug in it. The engine still turns over and has some compression but I have not tried to make it run and do not intend to try to make it run. This gem was fixed up many years ago and has been inside here in relatively dry Montana since that time.
Alamo engine company serial number#
The serial number A22384 is on the brass tag and is also stamped on the front of the water hopper but is mostly coverd up with paint. It is 20" wide and 19" high to the tops of the flywheels. This engine is 29" long not counting the later fuel tank. This is a cute little engine with flywheels that are only 17-1/2" in diameter. There may also have been an identical engine sold under the name of Empire but I am not sure of that. I am not an expert on this particular make of engine but I suspect it was built by Alamo and marketed by the Rock Island Plow Company of Rock Island. I suspect this is the smallest engine in the Rock Island line and is very likely much harder to find that the larger 1-1/2. This 1 HP Rock Island hit& miss old gasoline engine is in relatively good original condition. I figure the availability of these new parts will make this engine project more appealing to most engine collectors.
